Teixobactin: An antibiotic that kills pathogens without any detectable resistance

 

Researchers in the US discovered a new antibiotic that inhibits wall synthesis. This makes it unlikely that bacteria will develop resistance which is great news. However it only works on Gram positives. Gram negatives, such as E. Coli, have an extra layer of protection making them less susceptible to Teixobactin .

This is reassuring news due to the rising antimicrobial resistance,
